Before you apply
- You must be able to enter the Schengen Area WITHOUT a visa. If your passport requires a Schengen visa, you cannot apply at all. Ukrainians with biometric passports do qualify.
- The threshold is fixed in krónur: ISK 1,000,000/month (about €6,900), or ISK 1,300,000 with a spouse or partner. The euro figure moves with the exchange rate — one of the highest bars in the world.
- Savings do not count. You must prove INCOME through contracts or pay statements; a large bank balance is not enough.
- You do not get a kennitala (Icelandic ID number), which means you generally CANNOT open a bank account and some services stay closed to you.
- 6 months, non-renewable, and you cannot reapply for 12 months. Days already spent in the Schengen Area are deducted from the 180 you are granted.
- Paper application only — posted to the Directorate of Immigration in Kópavogur. There is no online route.
