Before you apply

  • NATIONALITY BAR — Ukraine is EXCLUDED. You must be from a country that has BOTH a visa-exemption arrangement AND a tax treaty with Japan (~50 countries). Japan's MFA states that visa-free entry is not available to nationals of the CIS countries, Ukraine, Georgia, China, India, Vietnam or the Philippines.
  • Income is set in yen: ¥10,000,000/year. The euro equivalent swings between roughly €57,000 and €63,000 with the exchange rate, so check the yen figure, not a translated one.
  • NO RESIDENCE CARD is issued. In practice this means you generally CANNOT open a Japanese bank account, sign a normal long-term lease, or get a phone contract. You are a 'super-tourist with work rights'.
  • Health insurance must cover at least ¥10,000,000 of medical treatment. You are NOT enrolled in National Health Insurance.
  • 6 months, non-renewable — and you must then spend 6 consecutive months OUTSIDE Japan before you can reapply.
  • No Japanese employers or clients. All income must come from outside Japan.
